Three-Dimensional Visualization of the Tectonic movement over Mexico by means of the Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements

I am presenting a short talk at the 41th Conference of Research and Development by Tecnologico de Monterrey (CIDTEC) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. January 19–21, 2011.

Summary

This paper presents the design of a computer system for 3D visualization of the movement of the Earth’s crust based on the information gathered and processed from the Global Positioning System (GPS). Several existing products, display information corresponding to the movement of each GPS component (latitude, longitude and altitude) using a set of static two-dimensional graphics, these techniques are useful and understandable to scientists on the topic, however, the need to analyze the information from a different perspective and create a presentation system that achieves the understanding of the phenomenon from a wider audience, are the motivation for this work. The system presented here has been built for the Department of Geography and Territorial Planning at the University of Guadalajara in the field of motion studies of the Earth’s crust in Mexico. Building 3D graphics with time-lapse controls and interaction between stations is a tool to understand the movement of the Earth’s crust. It helps to improve the understanding of our environment by facilitating the estimation of risks in different seismic zones in Mexico and focus institutional initiatives or programs aimed to the prevention of risks from the seismic and volcanic phenomena, as well as enrich the current theoretical model of plates of the Earth’s crust along Mexico and support the needs for further studies in not monitored areas. The case of study for the present work is the project of movement analysis of the Earth’s crust being developed at the University of Guadalajara, which analyzes data from the National Institute of Statistics Geography and Informatics of Mexico (INEGI) collected daily since 1993 from its network of 15 fixed GPS stations located in different regional offices covering the entire country.
